Concept for Affect Ratio at Navel (2021)
Affect Ratio is a drive-in cinema series in the overpass lot beside Navel. The series creates a richly experiential atmosphere meant to encourage connectivity, bridge polarities and cultivate the resonance of empathy. Attendees drive and tune into a key interactive element in the series – a radio transmission. In these thematically relevant prerecorded transmissions, we hear cinematic soundscapes and calls to action from local grassroots organizations. Their airtime shares messages and participation opportunities. A brief contextual introduction to the film transitions us into the screening. The evening is closed with a live music act curated to the film’s theme or location. During intermission, directions to a link are projected. We prompt the audience to record their impressions and experince of the film. Audio responses are worked into the next event’s transmission. The selected films are characterized by displays of vulnerability and global models for community-making. Featured films and accompanying musical acts: Yana’s Friends by Arik Kaplun (1999) - set by Rejoicer, No Hard Feelings by Faraz Shariat - set by Maral.
Affect Ratio posits that watching films is active rather than a passive act. When primed by intention, films begin to dialogue with the viewer’s perception. A group viewing suspends time, invites playful, imaginative freedom and reminds us of the wealth of shared experience.
